Sometimes, grace comes in unexpected ways. My director is acting as our manager, because the group manager left the company. I have been working a special task and finishing up, which the director knew about because he did my performance evaluation (that annual, miserable exercise that just wipes out any optimism one might have). My client sent a lovely note thanking me for all the work and copied the director. As if that wasn’t enough, she formally recommended me for the next phase of the task to another director. What a gift. A re-invention opportunity was given, gratis, no strings attached. Stunning, really. There is something to be said for just getting the job done without drama.
I need to remember that the next time the ego pops up and threatens to derail progress.
